CMA Exam Scoring System

IMA uses a scaled scoring system to accurately reflect your potential to be a CMA. The score ranges from 0–500 on the scoring scale.

Understanding Your CMA Exam Score
The CMA exam requires a scale of at least 360 points in your Part 1 and Part 2. Because there are multiple versions of the exam administered during each testing window, scores are scaled based on question difficulty level rather than percentage answered correctly to ensure fair grading.
  • In other words, answering 72% of all questions correctly will not guarantee a passing score
  • When reviewing which exam version you will confront on test day before scheduling, remember that scaled scoring exists for a reason — the exam is designed to evaluate whether a candidate has the skills, knowledge, and overall understanding to be a CMA
  • If you have adequate time to prepare and study with trusted CMA exam review materials, you can earn a passing score

Why Are CMA Exam Pass Rates Low?

The CMA exam may be one of the hardest accounting and finance certification exams to pass for several reasons. Tap each reason to learn more.

1Challenging and Extensive Content
The CMA exam covers many complex topics. While Part 1 deals with financial planning, performance, and analytics, Part 2 focuses on financial statement analysis, corporate finance, and decision metrics. The breadth and depth of knowledge required across both parts is substantial, requiring months of dedicated preparation.
2Language Barrier
One of the most significant reasons for low CMA exam pass rates is language barrier. The exam is conducted in English at Prometric Centres but administered in more than 100 countries. A lack of proficiency in the English language means test takers from non-English-speaking countries may struggle to read and answer questions quickly. Time constraints could also make it more difficult to stay on track.
3Lack of Preparation
Professional and time constraints, working a full-time job, and decision metrics can all lead to a lack of preparation. This can lead to not reviewing a quality review course in advance, which can affect your ability to pass the exam. With the right resources and preparation, however, passing on the first attempt is absolutely achievable.
